CBD Hand Care
Your hands are almost continuously on display. If they’re rough, irritable, or uncomfortable more often than you care to admit, you’ve likely realized how susceptible your hands are to the impact of frequent washing, alcohol-based sanitizers, and harsh household chemicals. Once the damage is done, it can take days, weeks, or even longer for the delicate skin to recover. But at what cost?
The skin on the back of your hands is just as fragile as the skin beneath your eyes. It’s also one of the first areas of your body to show visible signs of skin aging. When you’re serious about your skin’s overall health and appearance, it’s important not to underestimate the value of consistent hand care. Just a few simple tweaks to your daily routine could help keep your hands looking healthy, vibrant, and youthful.
your hands need consistent daily care
CBD Hand Care
Your hands are exposed to more soap, detergent, and other potentially irritating chemicals than any other area of your body. But with fewer oil glands, it’s far more difficult for the delicate skin to retain essential moisture. That’s why your hands are more prone to dryness, dehydration, and cracking. When the skin on your hands is irritated or damaged, it’s also more vulnerable to infection.
Of course, using a cream, salve, or lotion when your hands feel dry, rough, or uncomfortable can help, but is it enough? Maybe not. Moisturizing alone does little to protect your hands from sun damage and collagen loss. If you’re concerned about your hands, the way they feel now or how they might look years from now, consider how the following suggestions could help improve their health and appearance.
#1 – Avoid Washing and Rinsing with Hot Water
CBD Hand Care
Washing your hands with soap and water throughout the day helps keep viruses and bacteria from infecting your body. However, using excessively hot water depletes your skin’s protective lipid barrier, a common cause of skin dehydration. You don’t need how water to get your hands clean. It’s the soap that gets the job done. The water rinses the soap away. To help keep your hands soft and smooth, keep washing with soap and water, but keep the water warm, not hot, to help your hands retain essential moisture.
#2 – Use a Hand Soap with Moisturizing Ingredients
Washing with soap and water kills viruses and bacteria by breaking down their lipid barrier. Anti-bacterial agents are unnecessary and can dry your skin without providing any additional benefits. Instead, choose hand soaps made with moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, or shea butter to help keep your hands clean while protecting your skin. But above all, don’t try to spare your hands by using a soap-free cleanser when killing germs is essential. Soap-free formulations may not be effective against disease-causing organisms.
#3 – Wear Latex or Silicone Gloves
Although frequent hand washing is necessary, subjecting your hands to harsh detergents and other household chemicals is not. Whether you’re washing dishes, hand-washing your delicates, sanitizing the bathroom, or polishing furniture, protect your hands with a pair of durable latex or silicone gloves. Your grandmother was right; wearing gloves while doing household chores is a time-tested way to help keep your hands smooth, soft, and comfortable. You’ll also be reducing your exposure to some of the many chemicals used in household cleaning products that can absorb through your skin.
#4 – Protect Your Hands with Sunscreen
Sun exposure contributes to collagen loss, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Even indoor exposure through glass windows ages your skin. To help keep your hands looking youthful at every age, be sure to apply at least an SPF 15 to your hands when you plan on spending most of your time indoors. For prolonged sun exposure, use an SPF 30 or higher. Mineral sunscreens, products made with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, are effective right away. Chemical sunscreens need to be applied 15-30 minutes before heading outdoors. Both need to be reapplied every 2 hours to remain effective.
#5 – Exfoliate Gently Once or Twice Each Week
Young, healthy skin sheds its outermost layers as new cells reach the surface. This process, known in scientific circles as skin cell turnover, slows with age. As dead, depleted skin cells begin to shed unevenly, you’ll likely notice an increase in dryness, uneven texture, and fine lines. You can help accelerate skin cell turnover and stimulate the production of new skin cells by exfoliating your hands with a chemical exfoliant or facial scrub. If you don’t want to use the same product on your hands that you’re using on your face, consider making a hand scrub with coconut or olive oil blended with sugar or salt.
#6 – Include Your Hands in Your Facial Routine
As you work your way through your facial skincare routine, consider how your hands might also benefit from your favorite serums or masks, particularly if you’re using a product made with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a skin humectant that absorbs many times its own weight in water, a function that helps revive depleted skin while protecting its delicate moisture barrier. After applying a small amount of hyaluronic acid serum while your hands are still damp from cleansing or toning, lock in the moisture-infusing properties of your serum by immediately applying your hand lotion.
#7 – Use a Natural Hand Lotion Day and Night
Frequent hand washing, cold winter temperatures, indoor heating, and alcohol-based hand sanitizers can make your hands increasingly uncomfortable. While hand lotions can be quite comforting on irritable skin, they also help prevent dryness and keep your skin hydrated. That’s why using hand lotion frequently throughout the day is so important.8 However, hand lotions made with artificial fragrances and questionable chemicals can cause itching and irritation. Instead, consider investing in a lotion made with soothing plant oils and extracts that are kind to your skin. For severely dry hands, apply your lotion one last time before turning in for the night, then cover your hands with a pair of soft, breathable cotton gloves to improve moisture retention.9
#8 – Invest in a Hand Lotion Made with Hemp-Derived CBD
There are numerous ways to help keep your hands looking smooth, soft, and vibrant. The way you care for your hands today could have a considerable impact on how they look years from now. Whether you’re concerned about dryness or the visible signs of skin aging, consider using a hand lotion made with the many potential skin benefits of hemp-derived CBD.
CBD (cannabidiol) is an active plant element classified as a cannabinoid. The molecules are small enough to penetrate your skin and interact with important receptors found on nearly every type of skin cell, including the receptors involved in oil production, skin cell turnover, collagen formation, and hyperpigmentation. Current research also suggests that CBD has the potential to mimic the effects of natural skin lipids, a benefit that could help keep dry hands smooth, soft, and comfortable.10
